My 03 Mazda 6S up & died on my way to work this morning. I stopped at a traffic light & when I went to pull out the trans stayed in 5th gear. There's another light about 30 yards from that one. When I stopped at that next light the check engine light came on, the car stalled & wouldn't restart. When I did get it to start it was missing & generally ran like poo. Good thing I have the extended warranty. Of course, that doesn't mean they'll say it's covered... Here we go... Just venting... Tommy

Duratec's don't run a belt. They're chain drive. They didn't actually tear into it yet, but to me it looks like a loss of lubrication. From what I hear, those cars have a PCV that tends to fail. If it fails open, you blow oil into the intake, if it fails shut it pushes oil out the distick. Apparently, it loses oil VERY quickly either way. The oil light never came on, no noise, no overheating. Sitting at the stoplight it just slowed from idle RPM to 0 & then the oil light came on. I did get it to start aferwards, but it cranked slowly & when it ran it was missing on a few cylinders & the top end was noisy. The dealer said when the brought it in to the shop for a precursory look the engine was "knocking pretty good." They pretty much think it's done. I have the extended warranty & the service manager said they're "going to bat for me", so I'm not worried about it. I'm more curious as to why it happened. It's been dealer serviced from day 1, I have every receipt & it's never used or leaked a drop of oil. They did change an oil pan gasket on it a while back because they said it was leaking, but even then it never was low, dripped or smoked.

I'm assuming thats the 3.0L v6 24 valve motor? If so, they have always been good, biggest problem is short drives causing the oil to coke up and plug the passages in the pickup, and return holes in the head. How many miles do you drive each way to work?

How many miles do you drive each way to work? About 16 miles each way. It runs at full operating temp for at least 1/2 hour each way. Heck, it's making good heat about 5 minutes into the trip. Tommy
