Re: Darwin -- Future Plans

I'm an aircraft design engineer in Wichita, KS. The problem is that my employer (Boeing) is shutting down its Wichita facility. Some local companies are hiring and I've had a few interviews but haven't quite landed anything. Still hopeful though.

Re: Darwin -- Future Plans

T5montecarlo, The S-10 ratios may not be as nice as the V8 ratios but they're much better than the 3 speed Saginaw ratios. I'd heard about the Astro clutch, but hadn't heard that I'd need a new flywheel/bell housing. Makes me wonder how much it would cost to buy a V8 gearset and have it swapped into...

Re: V6 Tires?

Brian,

Are you happy with the 235/55R16s? Any objections? Can you "burn rubber" with them? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Re: Darwin -- Future Plans

I've occasionally considered that. I generally go between the TKO -- which would be overbuilt for a six and would demand trans tunnel work -- and some version of the T5. An S-10 T5 should be able to handle my usual driving style, but I'd be tempted to see if I could get an S-10 transmission rebuilt ...

Re: V6 Tires?

Come on!!! Have the sixers totally quit reading this forum??? Am I the only guy on the site who hasn't swapped his V6 for 8 cylinders yet??? I'd really like to hear somebody's comments on their tires even if they are only the original stock tires and you've really don't feel that you have anything t...

Re: V6 Tires?

T5,

Yes, the Saginaw 3 speed is original to the car, it originally came with a 2.73 rear end and a 200cuin V6. The car actually got its best road mpg with that gear set. I swapped it for 2.41 gears a few years ago. It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Re: V6 Tires?

My number one priority for this tire change is fuel economy. I figure that the 225s I currently have on the back of the car are much bigger than I need. Between the tall gearing, the V6 and the rear weight distribution, I really don't need the relatively large tire's extra traction. I would like to ...

Re: V6 Tires?

I'm not really trying to change the tire's diameter. The current rear tire is a 225/60R15, diameter 25.6 requiring 813 revolutions to cover 1 mile. My alternatives are a 205/65R15 (dia 25.5 requiring 818 rev/mi) and a 195/70R15 (dia 25.7 requiring 810 rev/mi) thus the contenders are all within 1% of...

Re: V6 Tires?

I guess I was hoping that a few somebodies would be able to say what they were using on their V6 cars (even if it was just the stock tires) and how well or not so well they worked. My understanding is that most Malibus came from the factory with P185/75R14 or P195/75R14 tires. Is anybody using them?...

V6 Tires?

I'm looking to change Darwin's rolling stock before her next big road trip. The problem is that my little red wagon is currently running 205/60R15 on the front and 225/60R15 on the back. Not only does that feel like overkill for a 4.3 but the difference in tire diameters means that I'd be forced to ...

Re: Darwin -- Future Plans

Doober, I've actually been debating between the Super T-10 with a 3.42 first gear and an S-10 T5, possibly with a V8 Camaro gearset. Generally the S T-10 wins out on strength, relative simplicity of instl (no modification to the crossmember or changes to the ring and pinion) and cost. Vortec heads (...

Darwin -- Future Plans

Its amazing how much fun Darwin has become now that she actually runs right. Between a defective Holley, which somehow disolved in fuel and junked up the fuel bowls, and an improperly stabbed distributor throwing timing off The 4.3 has been in an extremely poor state of tune for so long I figured th...

Re: Emission compatible 4 barrel intake for 4.3

Ok, then the 1985 Astro/Full Sized PU 4bbl intake has an EGR setup. That would be good to know if we ever get smog checks in Kansas.

Re: Anybody build up a 229 V6?

There are actually 3 Edelbrock intakes for Chevy 90 degree V6s. The one we're interested is the #2111 Performer which (according to Edelbrock) fits the 200 & 229 V6 as well as the 262 with nonvortec (85-95) heads. There is also a #2114 carbureted Performer for 262s with the 96 & later Vortec heads a...
