Re: Frame off advice

Now, start your bodywork but leave the front off of it until the engine is in.
There is a lot you can do on the back half and it will still be a lot easier to do the engine install with no fenders to lean over.

Re: Narrowing the bumpers

Outstanding work, Jack.

Glad to see your longroof still lives. The guy that bought mine shot some primer on it and that's about it. He does drive it a lot so at least he's enjoying it.

Went to a good home but it still sucks to see it in his driveway.

Re: Doors on Or off?

Doors off, jamb it and do the inside of the doors. Put the doors back on, align them, backtape the doors and jambs and paint it with the doors on the car. Paint texture and color will be uniform. How many time do you see the doors and fenders that were painted off the car come out a different color?...

Re: Quarter Panel Replacement

NOT the same.
The el camino has a different shape at the end near the bumper and uses a different filler.
You could use these if you either chop off the ends or use el camino corner fillers.

Re: Elco/Malibu 80 Grill????

Did not check the pricing.

That is a bit pricy for spray paint.

I would check some of the plating business's costs before you invest the spray paint money.

Re: Elco/Malibu 80 Grill????

I have not used it.

But if it REALLY is that easy and the results are as shown it would be difficult to beat.

I have a good 79 grille out in the storage bldg. :-k

I might just order this stuff and shoot it to check the results myself.

Re: 1979 buick century wagon

Check the hood lines and the raised area of the header panel. There is usually a difference between the different makes even though they appear the same.
It would be easier (to me) to swap the entire front cap than to change out all the parts.

Re: how hard is it to replace a roof?

Excellent photo instruction. Did that once on a 73 Lemans years ago. With today's adhesives there is another way if there are no rust issues. If the inner structure is good you could just "skin" it. Cut your replacement roof panel skin out to the drip rail and to the front and back glass. Cut the da...

Re: Lining up fenders & doors

Shims will all be where the mounting bolts are located. It's a trial and error job. Example: No shims top and bottom on the rear mounting points will usually push the fender "out" in the middle where it meets the door. Be sure to use slotted body shims and not washers for this or you will be REALLY ...

Re: Reproduction body parts & trim clips

I ordered a pair of fender extensions for a 76 Olds for a friend of mine. He owns a body shop and was doing a resto for a customer and didn't know they were available. Replica Plastics had them here in 4 days. He was very pleased with the quality and said they needed only minor prep work. I hope any...

This should help:

Spend a lot of time here first (body-exterior forum) and you will have answers to questions you didn't know to ask.
