My current engine is a 383 with dart iron eagle heads and a hydraulic roller cam with unknown specs. I am looking to do a budget upgrade of aluminum heads and a cam. I have checked a lot of magazine 383 buildups and think I have a good combo to get near 450 hp give or take. I wanted some input from the board just to make sure I am on the right track.

The bottom end is getting freshened up but I am unsure of the parts in there. I was told is all good stuff. I am looking at a 64cc aluminum head which should put my compression around 9.8:1.

The heads I was looking at were Blueprint heads 64cc chamber, 195cc Intake Runner, 75cc exh, 2.020/1.600 in. Valves, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mll-h8002k and Promaxx 64cc chamber, 190 cc aluminum heads http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pmx-2181

The cam i am leaning towards is a comp cams Xtreme Energy Hydraulic Roller advertised Duration 288/294, Lift .520/.540, 110 lobe separation, 2500 - 6000rpm. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-12-433-8

I wanted to go with the bigger cam for the chop but fear that the RPM range would be sluggish at the bottom. the specs are Hydraulic Roller Tappet, Advertised Duration 294/300, Lift .540/.562, 2800-6100 rpms. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-12-443-8

Thanks in advance for the input!

For the heads I would stay with dart, afr, brodix and trick flow. I read in the past people having problems with blueprint products. Stay with the well known names. JM2C

It's hard to give advice when you don't know what the goals are or what the car is going to be used for. I will say the heads, cam, intake, converter, & rear all need to work together.

I ran Patriot, now Promaxx, for a year in my daily driver and they performed well. I know magazine articles don't mean much to some people but Patriot/Promaxx seem to out perform other "budget" heads consistently.

What are the specs on your heads now? Can let everyone know what the rest of your drivetrain is? What are your hopes to get out of the engine?

Is it the same engine as when you bought it from appsk8r? I just saw a post from him recently, he may be able to tell you what it has. If that cam you're looking at is the XR288 cam, AFR actually lists a dyno near 500hp on a 9.5:1 383 with their 190cc Vortecs on the website.
