Got the car back together and driving, now with 3.42s, before 3.08s. Right now it's fine, but eventually I'd like to be able to take the car on the highway and not be screaming Rs. I wanted to go with the TKO600, but right now $2k is out of the question. Heard from different people that a T-5 can be built to handle some power. Is this true? How much power, and how much to build? What transmission do I need to get?

For a background on the car, it has a mild 454, iron heads, guessing power is about 350-375, right now has the 7.5, but found a EB 9" with 3.50s. I think with this gear and the OD of the 5 speed would make for a nice driver. Car will not be drag raced, but will have the occasional clutch dump and speed shifting. Tires are 295/50s.

If you want clutch dumping and speed shifting with a BBC, and are in need of a 5 speed, then save your pennies. To build a T5 with an aftermarket case and gear set will run you close to $2k, and is still inferior to a TKO500, TK600, Richmond setup, etc. I road race/hill climb with a WC T5, but it's in a light car, no clutch dumps, and easy/infrequent shifting, and I've already broken some pieces.

Supe, are you using original BW gears or replacement gears in your WC T5? I am using the stronger Ford 295Z gears (I built it in about 1995) with a GM input shaft. It survived many clutch drops with slicks and speed shifting. Granted, that was with an L69 305 with some bolt on tweaks that ran 14.61.

There are much stronger gears, but they are much more pricey, as you stated.

I have time, car doesn't get driven much right now. Just started new job, but doesn't pay crap, so gonna take some time to save up for it. Maybe when tax time gets here, and get enough back I can get one. I think I can get one for about $2k, maybe less.

To upgrade your trans, $5500.00. To buy one outright, $7000.00...

Well, the lucky ones that actually NEED a trans with that type of power capacity can usually afford one...
