7.5 build up!!!!! where do i start?

Im trying to beef up my 7.5 10 bolt in my 80 bu. The car came with the str8 6 and 1 legger rear with 273's. It now has a 327 .60 over, track1 heads and a 350 trans.... Mini spool, auburn, or a posi transplant ? gear ratio's? ect?????
But my question is where do i start and what parts do i need.... Please excuse my ignorance im a motor guy but willing learn...

7.5's are cannon fodder. Get a GN 8.5. Money well spent IMHO.

Step 1) remove rear
Step 2) scrap rear
Step 3) install something different

I wouldn't waste too much money on it, any kind of power and slicks will have you at the junkyard looking for something better to replace it with.

Street tires and you'll be fine

Replace all the bearings and seals, If you have the money call Summit racing for new axles, posi (if your going with new posi and axles get 28 spline) and a differential cover with bearing cap support.

I'm in the middle of an 8.8 swap out of a fox mustang.
1 posi rear axle. $150
2 junkyard axles $50 to convert to 5 lug 5x4.5
Iceman conversion uppers $145
Double hiem joint lowers $tbd..
or cut off lca brackets and weld on to the 8.8.

I'm still collecting parts so????

I'm sure it will be cheaper than an 8.5 gn rear plus you'll get double adjustable uca's

Keep in mind the Ford axle is ½" wider per side!

Replace the 7.5" with a 8.5", Ford 9" or Chevy 12 bolt. Putting any money into a 7.5" is wasteful...


I'm thinking about writing a post in the "Parts Needed" section. Anyone who is thinking about spending money on improving a 7.5" should just send the cash to me. I could think of a lot better ways to spend it... :lol:
