700 r4 will not go to od

it a stock 700r4 in my 1988 silverado, shifts great in 123, but will not got to overdrive. it also has a mild vibration every few seconds in 3rd. is it something simple? or do i need to get a new trans?

maybe a solenoid, or dirt in the valve body.

Yeah, sounds like something may be hanging up in the valve body that won't allow it to go into 4th (if that's the case). Is it not going into 4th, is the converter not locking up, or both? There is a solenoid for the lockup portion of the converter, there are kits to make it simple, but basically it's just a vacuum switch and a relay to trigger it. If you have this already and it's still not locking up, it's not very difficult to change, but you do have to pull the pan.
