also how do you tell the difference between a tall deck and short deck big blocks ? the big block i got was out of a one ton truck so is that a tall deck or short?

Tall decks were only 427 engines. And that was in larger commercial trucks.

366 & 427 are Tall Decks.
Short Deck = 9.800"
Tall Deck = 10.200"
.400" Difference in Deck Ht.

Water Pump mounting holes are right next to the Deck surface on a Short Deck block, so you can tell easily by that.

There was also a 1 or 2 year 454 tall deck

i believe the casting # is 10114182

best to take the numbers off the block and post them

Turna I think that's an Internet rumor spread around.
The last 454SS P'up I owned had that 10114182 Block casting # and it wasn't a Tall Deck. It was a Gen-V 4-Bolt Block tho' & they're Truck only Blocks.
There're several 454 Bowtie Tall Deck Blocks.

i used the stock oil pan from the 2 wheel drive donor suburban and it fits perfect, so truck oil pans work, i think maybe the 4x4 pan may be different and if not then all truck pans work

fyi....big block car or truck oil pans are 5 qt capacity.....and fit the g bodies......also make sure to use the right motor mounts......i mean the matching frame to motor mounts........early f body style work.....70 s to 81........
