Some people run a special break in oil. I just run what I'm going to run in the motor.

If it's a flat tappet cam, get something with a high ZDP content or use a break in oil additive specifically designed for flat tappet cams.

Honestly, I wouldn't even think of breaking in a flat tappet came without adding an EOS anymore. Even the "good" oils have cut back so heavily on the zinc content, you don't know what's what anymore.

I just know Compcams says to use it, I have installed five cams in the last year and half without one failure.

like the others have said above, the oils today don't have the additives they used to. Add a quart of GM Engine Oil Supplement (EOS).

A lot of high end engine builders use Brad Penn oil for break in, like the NASCAR guys.

That being said, i've never had a problem breaking in a cam with the EOS, pre-lubing and making sure your engine fires the first time.
