Hello all, I just recently was given a 400 sbc, it has been machined .030 over. there are still stock heads and an unknown cam in it. My question is, after I pull the heads off, what would it take to "freshen" up the bottom end if there is still a nice crosshatch on the walls? The heads will not go back on, probally going to put a set of Vortecs or something of the sort on top with a mild cam. Street driven car, no racing. Also if anyone in NJ knows a machine shop, let me know.

Take the engine apart and measure the bores. They might look to be OK, but rather be safe than sorry. A machine shop will tell you if it's out of round or not. Stock rod 400s tend to get out of round with the short rods. Take the crank and rods and have them checked as well. If all that is good, slap the Vortec's on (don't forget the steam holes) put in a Xtreme 268 cam, aluminum intake and some headers, and have fun with a 400+ horses.
