Gas gauge

I've been tinkering on the 82 lately and noticed that the gas gauge is reading full with ignition off and when I start it up it moves to over full. Without dropping the tank it seems that the wires are connected at the sender. I cleaned the ground at the back and reattached it. Could it be a faulty gauge or sending unit? I'm sure I've seen the answer posted before but can't remember. I tried a search and not seeing what I'd like.

Thanks in advance
Kevin

Whats the gauge do when you remove the ground to clean it. Sometimes the wires breaks in the harness. So i would check the wires in the wiring harnes look for a number 8 pink wire.Go up the harnes as far as you can and strip the wire a little then again as close to the fuel tank as you can then hook up a jumper wire see what you get. try this with the ground also. Try a different gauge .
