I am in need of a new converter and was wondering if a 4500 was to much stall? Race only no street time, unless you count putting it on the trailer :)

355 11.5/1 mid 5 lift cam, th350, 28/9/15 slicks. Car/driver wt not 100% but thinking around 3000/3100. mid 12@107 Need any other specs?

Was told once that more stall is better but just seems that a 4500 would be crazy. I will be using the foot to hold the car on the line and launching around 28-3 just cuz I don't want to but to much sudden power to my little 7.5 rear(I know, One day it will be upgraded-lets just stick with this thought for now) :D Thought I read somewhere that if I have to much stall that it will lose MPH on the big end. Don't care as long as the car gets there quicker!

Stall should be set at Max TQ/RPM of the motor on a 3 speed and 300 RPM over on a Glide

That sounds all scientific and all but I don't know my max TQ/RPM was kinda looking for something a little more general. As you can see from the 1/4 mile times/MPH that I am not running a super HP motor. The car is not ran for comp just test and tune and just trying to find the right set up

Money well spent to tune on a chassis dyno to find out, the problem is a 3500 converter is 3500 behind a certain HP if you raise it the stall goes up, if the HP lowers it goes down with it mild cars 3500 is the norm

so let me see if I understand you. If my stall is 4500 and my motor doesn't have enough power it wont take it up to a "true" 4500 but later on as I increase my HP then it will get higher into the stall? Meaning that I can use a 4500 now and be good later on down the road when I get into more power?

Think of it this way when you put it in gear and pull away from a stop it may only stall to 1000 but the higher HP you give it the more it stalls 4500 is a lot for a mild motor and a converter company can tell you what it will stall if you can give them a idea of the hp used even the rear gear will effect the stall more load higher stall

That's what I was thinking but just wanted someone else's thoughts. I igured the 4500 would be to much, not 100% but I should be in the 375-400 hp range and I am running a 4:10. I think I am going to go with a J.W. converter, they have a 3400 and a 3800 and they are in my $ range. I will contact them before I make my final decision. Thanks for all the help, I understand a converter a little better now.

yeah, Jeff is right. if you are running 375-400hp a 3,500-3,800 would suit you just fine. just play around with the car on the start/launch and leave at different stall speeds to see what will work best for you. glad to hear you know the difference between faster and quicker as well, most guys don't. lol. good luck in your endeavors!!!
