I have a 1978 Monte Carlo with a STOCK SBC 2 barrel engine and would like to know what is the MAX cam lift this stock engine will take, reason for asking is it is my daily driver and I'm about to change the timing chain and lifters so I thought I would also change out the cam while I'm in it,will a cam with like .427" lift work with no problems in this 2 barrel carbed SBC 305 engine or any lower or higher lift cams?THANKS

Probably allot more cam choices out there. Before I built my current 383, I stuck a L79 cam in my rebuilt 305 stock heads and all. Only thing I added besides the cam was a set of 1 5/8" Headmans, dual exhaust and 3.73's. The L79 cam really woke up the sleepy 305. Idled very nice and pulled hard for what it was.

The L-79 327ci/350hp GM cam was #3863151 and was .447/.447 and 222/222@ .050 on a 114 LSA

Like I said, there's probably a ton of better choices out there.

I doubt you can put a cam with too much lift in it and heres why: The stock valve springs will limit the usable rpm to prolly under 5000 rpm. So a cam with a powerband above that is wasted. Try any of the .440 to .510 (or there abouts) lift cams which are usually the RV style, 1200-4500 rpm cams. They will make you smile.

OK and I was considering the Summitracing cam kit 1102 with 421/444 inch lift and 1,200-4,800 RPM range with 204/214 duration @ .050 with the stock SBC 305 2 barrel carb. what do yall think?THANKS

I had that cam in the 350 in my wagon and it worked well. I have the K1103 in my L69 305 (more compression and 4V) and love it.

In my case, both have manual transmissions.
