I have a 10 bolt out of a 83 El camino for sale. Its nothing special. Non posi, car was a V6/AT. I had someone ask me if it was an 8.5 or a 7.5. I couldnt recall the answer to that since its been a while. I need my mind refreshed. Can anyone help me answer this or should I come back with numbers off the tube? The only thing I knew is that the GN and Monte SS cars have the 8.5. But is it all cars have the 8.5 and some get the posi units. Its been a while since I have looked at these cars so closely.

Montes never had an 8.5, a lot of people seem to think this. Only T-Type Regals/GNs, and I believe 442s had them.

8.5" (note squared corners at the bottom)

7.5" (note "fingers" at the bottom)

Chevy 8.2" (note ridge stamped into the cover, no corners or "fingers")

BOP 8.2" (note "notches" on either side of the cover, no corners or "fingers")

If it's out of a completely stock 78+ Elky, it's a 7.5".

442 GN that is correct 84-87 ONLY.

I would bet it all on 7.5 for sure.

If you post a picture of the rear cover will ID it for you real quick. Jim

thank you for posting this. BIG HELP. As I am sure you folks see the "whats the difference" question often, maybe sticky.
