removing top nut on back of brakes?

You have to hold the stud on the "inside" of the backing plate. I usually do it with vise grips. It's the portion that the shoes rest against and the springs go around. You will need an impact to make life easy, It's a locknut so it will come off hard the whole way. HTH

I did it without an impact and was a real chore to do both backing plates, but it can be done.
