Roller lifter/cam question

On a roller lifter/cam, is it necessary to keep the lifters with their specific lobe? I know it needs to be done in flat faced hydraulic lifters. I've been told you can just swap out the roller cam with a new cam, and use the old lifters. I'm not swapping the cam yet, but I plan to. For now, I'm just going to pull the lifters and retaining plate out to clean them up. I don't want to trash this cam, even though I'm going to swap it soon.

My other question is about the distributor gear. Do I need a brass, or steel , or what gear for a SBC roller cam? The engine is a 97 350, with the factory cam. I have a new distributor, but I originally bought it for a regular camed engine, not roller.

Thanks,
Scott.

The lifters can be used on any lobe.

The gear varies by cam material. I bought a melonized gear that I've been using on a billet without issue. The gears are $30 or so from NAPA.
