timing ?

496 bb chevy just adjusted the valves 24in 26ex got it running tryied to set it at 16 on inti timing takes too long to start up. have it at 30 and it sounds great. but the funny thing is when it is set at 16 first time we start it up every time it starts perfect, then it has hard time firing up

How did you set the lifters? solid or hydraulic?

solid. intake about to close, then adjust ex.
ex about to open then adjust intake.
intake 24
ex 26
made sure they had a little drag on the roller.

I set the timing on my big block at 36* total advance and use the lightest spring msd has . I think full timing by 2500rpm and it starts fine all the time.

Yeah you are right but intl timing shouldn't be 36 that too high
