Change the regulator to a one-wire. (self energizing)
Should cost ya about $15 for the part, easy install.

Is that inside the alternator?

Yes, find a local rebuilder for the part, or search online for your favorite source.

It's a fairly easy install.....requires the same skills as "clocking" the unit for mounting.
Insert a toothpick or spray tube from a can of WD-40 to hold the brushes when you put the halves back together.

i took an old alternator apart just to check it out before. i cleaned it up, put it back together, and used it on my car with no problems. goob's right....it's very easy even without the tips from someone who has done it before. you'd figure it out.
