i have 17 inch wheel with 4 and half inch backspase, will they fit a 1980 malibu?

An eight inch rim should have about 3.5 back spaceing. That works great to run 295x50xr15 in the rear. Not sure with taller rims. Good luck

how wide is the 17" wheel? the lower profile tires on the bigger wheels, you can fit a wheel with more backspacing opposing a 15" wheel with a wider tire bulge

I ran 17x8 with 4.5 backspace with no problems. However 4" backspace in the rear would have looked better.

Yeah width is fairly important over 7", up to 9.5" will fit the rear no problem with a fender roll/trim, front will handle up to 9", 4.875" absolute max without rubbing on the control arm, not too sure if it would hit the sway bar though.

I have 17" x 8" on my car. The rears have 255/50s with 4.5" BS. The fronts have 245/45s with 5" BS because I have the B-body spindle/1LE brake conversion which widens the front track a little.
