79' 2dr Malibu L92/4l60e swap

Post by silvy370turbo » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:36 pm

Just picked up this 79' Malibu, been looking for one for a long time, very hard to find a nice example out here..... Plan is a 08' hummer L92 long block with a cam and a semi-built 4l60e and 4000ish stall (and maybe some spray :eyes:)... car is pretty clean and mostly original, had a 406 SBC and turbo 350 when i got it which i gave back to the seller. Kinda funny part, it was bought new from the dealer i work at now in 79' by a school teacher, use to see it drive around all the time.

With such a large engine some mid length headers may be selling it short. I have just a stock 98 LS1 in mine and I used the pacesetter F-body headers on mine. It took some modification but they fit well now. Great build so far........I'm jealous of the engine btw. Alex.

so did some test fitting last night, the Spohn mounts only lined up with two holes on one side and three holes on the other which didn't end up working out anyways..... going to bolt the frame mounts to the engine later today and then set it in to get an idea where it should be....

Called Spohn today and was told to bolt mounts on engine first and then set it in and mark hole locations that need to be drilled.... kinda wish i would have just done the conversion plates for the OE SBC clam shells....

Jegster crossmember also didn't fit well at all, had to use a come along to squeeze the frame rails together a 1/2" to get bolt holes aligned.

The spohn mounts are not as easy to "bolt in" as the adapter plates, but once they are in, they have a much better fit and finish than the plates and you can actually use the low mount A/C compressor your engine came with. By the way, your build is looking great!

The crossmembers are always a bear. No two of these cars is exactly the same and the frames are far from strong.

Nice build so far!

Thanks! I'll give the mounts a try, should work fine was just disappointed that the Spohn add was misleading....
