Looking into a 9" rear for my El Camino since the 7.5 is starting to show signs of giving out. I've looked at Moser, Strange, TRZ and even Quick Performance and they all sell units that will support way more power than I could ever throw at them. I've also toyed with the idea of junkyarding a 9" and building it to what would fit the car, but I'm left with a modified stock housing and I've heard mixed reviews about welding on cast iron to put the appropriate brackets on and the toughness of the factory 9" housing. What's your thoughts on this as I'm not sure which way to go. I'm leaning towards buying one but that's lots more money than the budget will allow. I've looked at 8.5" and 12 bolt housings but I'll be in it quite a bit to find one and rebuild it around here, not many around and people want big $ for them, its almost more cost efective to go the 9" route.

I've always figured if I got to the point of a rear end, I would just buy a pre-fabbed 9" housing and piece it together. Maybe even do it over a course of a couple months if need be. By the time you get a junkyard one and maybe have to replace everything anyway, and all the labor, I personally would have just bought a new one. And I'm sure if worse comes to worse and you need to get rid of the car later on, it should still be worth quite a bit.

The other day i found and old 9" Ford from a F100 light truck, my grandfather used a long time ago to teach me how to adjust the pinion and gear tolerance just by touch. The is a C7AW-E, and it has a 3.73 ratio.
I would like to know if this case is good enough to use it in my proyect. I would like a 4.1 ration and a locking system. I would have to buy a housing and i found this on summit racing...

Any info would be really apreciated...

I bought a new Moser with 31 spline axles. With 31 spline you can use a truck center, not locked into dedicated race stuff. The Moser has heavy wall axle tubes and a new center housing. They set the pinion angle into the brackets per my request. It uses GM backing plate bolt pattern, so, mine has Chevelle backing plates and brakes (drum) withpark brake cables just like the General intended.

I ordered mine thru a racer that is a dealer,it was $850 shipped for housing and axles, 4* down pinion angle, uses GM backing plates (centers cut to clear big bearing Ford). I picked up a used center and 4.10's and a spool.

31 spline axles will support and enormous amount of power...

Seems like I have about $1600 in mine, with a the Daytona pinion support, forged yoke, new brakes, etc...maybe a little over that.

You might consider an 8.8 Fox rearend and a baseline suspension kit...
