Does GM's own .28" compressed thickness steel laminate head gasgets work with aluminum heads? I've got dished slugs and really need the narrow bore/thin gasket to keep compression up....
It's starting to look like the heads will be E-tec 170's.

If they won't work does anybody have something to recommend?

Yup, they'll work.
I've used the #1094 Fel-Pro coated steel gaskets with aluminum heads too, no problems.

Perfect! -I definetely trust your knowledge.
I better take a peek at those Fel-Pro's as well because they are even thinnner if my memory serves me right....?

They are .015" compressed.

Used them several times with aluminum heads including the AFR-headed 383 in my Malibu currently. They work fine.

The 1094 Fel Pros are a coated steel shim (which is why they are thinner than the GM composition gaskets) and apparently also work real well, although I have never used them personally.

I use them on everything that is a 4.0" bore base engine, won't work on 4.125" bore base engines.

Good to know!
I beleive the .015 compressed thickness with the FelPro might be cutting it too tight since the shortblock is a 86and up piece that, if my memory serves me rigtht, doesn't have the slugs 0.025" down the holes like the older 350's used to have.
I need to double check that but my eyes tell me they are around .010-.015 down the holes.
I don't know how tight i dare to run but so far a .035 squish is the tightest i have used, and that was on a fully machined and meticoulusly built 383. -This is just a new-ish shortblock that will see some bolt-ons...

The old standard O.E. replacement steel shim gaskets are .018" compressed.
I forget exactly what the Mr. Gasket steel shim gaskets squish to, but right in that area.....
