TKO 600 shifting problems

Post by kevind » Sat Mar 24, 2012 9:09 pm

I've had a TKO 600 in My Malibu for a few years. It has just started to not want to go in any of the gears on the front of the shifter so no 1st,3rd or 5th. It wont go in even if the engine isn't running. Sometimes if you pat the gas and jerk the car in 2nd or 4th it will free up the shifter and it will go fine. I'll probably pull it out tommorow but I was just wandering if anyone has had a problem like this.

You're not the only one. The TKO's are notorious for rail problems. Call Paul @ Liberty's Gears:

I took it out today and removed the shifter. The shifter was made in two pieces a flat base that bolts to the transmission and a round part with the actual shifter that bolts to the the flat base part with 4 bolts. 3 of the 4 bolts had feel out and wedged between the shifter rail and the trans case. I put some loctite on them and put them back in. It seems to have fixed the problem.

That was too easy. I am glad to hear the issue was minor.
