I had researched the commercial solutions that will remove rust by soaking in a solution overnight. All had reviews that were not overwhelming and some reviewers reported having better success with vinegar. I tried 5% distilled white vinegar for a week, but perhaps a shorter time would have been enough. Here are the before/after pictures.

The bucket contained 1 other rusty bracket (the one that retains the top of the heater core) and all of the bolts.

If I had to do it again, I would not soak all of the bolts. I rinsed all of the parts several times and dried them with compressed air, but still had to clean each one individually with a brass wire brush to remove the rust stain.

Everyone I've spoken to that has used Evaporist has raved about it. I have used Metal Rescue and found it to work pretty well.
