I have a 1980 Chevy Monte Carlo with a 350 automatic transmission with column shift I'm wanting to replace the 350 transmission with a 700R4 with the stock column shift is there a way I can retain to stock column shift to work with all the gears with the 700R4 transmission, will the stock linkage bolt to the 700r4 trans or what? THANKS

I haven't did that. But I know it can be done. You would get a different gear indicator for your dash. I was going to do the same with mine, but the linkage was bad. So I put in a B&M floor shifter.

i think nillabu did his column with a 200r4.yes it's a different trans but it's still a swap of the 4-speed nature.maybe he can shed some light on your idea.

I used a lokar rod linkage kit to make my 200r4 work on the column.

If I were to do it a again...I would have used the cable kit instead ( i didnt know they offered that at the time)

With the rod...wot in 1st gear would bump the trans into 2nd if I didnt hold it.

Im going to attempt to make a cable contraction to use my column shift with the lexus trans

I have done this with two different malibus, an 80 and 81. the steering column will work but doesn't have enough travel to put the trans in first gear. You can adjust the linkage to get the other positions to work, putting it in drive it shifts through the gears fine, I had to modify the frame bracket beside the trans to get the correct pivot alignment. In both instances I eventually replaced the column shift with a B&M Pro-Stick, column shifters just aren't much fun.

To get it to work properly into 1st gear the cross shaft has to be raised to be level with the trans.
I did this by getting another stock bracket from the bone yard.
Cutting about 1/3 off the top of the original bracket, cut the bottom off the new bracket and welding the 2 together to raise the pivot point of the cross shaft higher.
