So my truck has a 3.08 rear. I've come across a Craigslist '88 rear with lower miles (81k vs. 245k) and 3.73 gears, and the exterior is in better shape (western truck vs. Michigan truck). The plan would be to use the '88 housing, leaving the gears alone for backlash reasons. My question is mainly regarding the splines... are they the same? I just came across the ad and I'm texting back & forth with the owner on the axle in question.

88 & prior would be 28 spline.. 89 they went to the 30 spline..

just to add..the two years mentioned above are both iffy..kinda....some people claim they`ve heard of a few 89 models floating around with 28`s (GM using up stock?)..and others have heard that they jump the gun a bit, and threw a few 30`s in late 88`s..neither have I ever heard being absolutely confirmed...but i figure I may as well keep the rumors going..LOL..really though, just wanted to mention it, on the off chance something like that happens here..

P.S..I got a 87 K5, and am a member of a related site...Was looking for replacement/stronger axles a while back..hence the reason for having this info in my head..LOL

I've read about some '88s having 30 spline as well, I'm also starting to wonder about this whole swap... I did some looking on Summit's site this morning and it listed 2 different lengths for axles. Mine also has a gov lock, so I may wind up just having to get new spider gears or save up for an actual posi.
