ok, first off this is my 1st post so take it easy on me. i am working on my first g body/drag car project, and after some research i have decided a 9 inch is the route i want to go in. i have one from a truck that is in good working order. i am about to have two 7.5's and the non posi one is otherwise going to be scrap. im wondering with proficient fabrication skills and a welder, is it possible to transfer the lower controll arm brackets and fab identicle uppers on the 9" housing thus saving me like a grand on a currie or equivelant?

it seems like it would work, and with all the other stuff ill be purchacing a G-housing really isnt in the budget. and i love to fab things. is this an advisable substitute for a housing if i take my time? :-k

Well, there are G-body 9 inch set ups for sale on the online market place for like $345 without axles. If you figure $100 for a donor 9-inch, the shops around here charge $250 to cut down and reweld tubes/housings and re-spline stock axles. Or $100 or so a pair to cut down and respline axles alone(he'll throw in redrilling for whatever bolt pattern, most of the time).

Some kits come with axles for like $715.

You might be ahead by purchasing one of the bracket kits from a place like Speedway for about $80-$100, to weld onto your housing. 9 inches have a larger axles tube diameter, so its not just cut off and re-weld. Still have to have the axles cut down, re-drilled unless your going to use truck or whatever rear wheels and brakes.

Then there is the jig/fixture needed to make sure you weld the housing ends on straight/true.

Its not hard, if you have a little help or have been around one that was done. Welding the suspension brackets on is about the easiest part.

thank you asll for your replys. i think i am going to go with your advice and do a quick perf housing with gm lug axles and my 9 inch chuck. im still ahead of the game, and from my research this will be a "finlal" rear end modification for my car.

can you guys give me some gearing advice for a 450hp th350 setup as far as gear ratios go? i do minimal highway driving, but do drive arround town a good bit. i will be trying to get down to the track as often as possible next year, and i really do want to contend.

what kind of track is it a 1/4 or 1/8th mile that will make a big difference in what you should gear it....

Do you have nitrous on the car? A good street strip gear would be 4:10 if your not usding any power adders. If you are 3:73 or 3:90 would be good choices.
