hey guys, trying to road ready the car and could use a little help, and yes i've studied the Gbody wiring diagrams lol. from the fuse pannel going to the brake lights, theres two wires i need to replace the white/tan? and the dark green one. are these the power source for the lights and what are they made of there not typical copper wire? anyone else have this problem?

does anyone have picks on how they wired there gauges, i want to see if i did mine right...and what wire did you tap into for lights and power?

thanks alot guys

Lights... as in illumination for the gauges? I believe the wire for that is gray, and I would use the original intended wire for the gauges (pink, goes right up to the original cluster, same with the gray too). Are you trying to wire in a 3rd brake light too?

k thanks, and no the wires that i believe power the tail lights are all bunged up lol and i'd rather replace them then have a fire, but the wires arent copper inside i was just wondering if i replaced them with copper core wires is it going to mess anything up? what is that type of wire called anyway?

i'd still like to see a picture of gauge setups from behind, i no you guys have some stop holding out lol help me get this thing done so i can destroy this pack of 5.0's crusing around my town lol (or attempt to )

Well, I'm using the factory SS cluster. What do you mean bunged up? Not copper inside? I'm a little lost here. there's a normally closed momentary switch that the brake pedal presses on, and there's a 2-terminal plug there for the taillights. What are you trying to do in that area? Has someone before you messed with the taillight wiring?

My personal recommendation (only because I don't like cutting and splicing factory harnesses when I don't have to) would be to re-pin the harness for the gauge cluster setup (as opposed to idiot lights), and use the holes where the little sprung connectors for the factory gauges. Put a small screw/nut in each hole that comes from a sending unit, and use that as a terminal for each of your gauges (water, temp, oil, etc.). From there you could make a plate (aluminum, etc.) to mount the gauges in, and wire them up that way. That way there won't be a question about the wiring behind the gaues, at least past the point where you wired them to the factory harness.

bunged up as in FuKed up lol ( watch Fubarz the movie its a good one) and ya the owner before me really hacked up the wiring, its been the biggest obsticle on the car, not only has he sliced into every wire there is for some reason, but hes also painted most of them black so tracing wires on my cars more of a guessing game...plus im not much of an electrian if you cant tell, lol i've replaced what i understood, the motor runs so most of the wirings right, just gotta get some lights and gauges to be legal.

everythings on a switch pannel, so will the gray wire only have power when the cars on? im going to re-wire the thing in the winter, just want to drive it this year with no fires or shorts...

thanks again guys, this site and it's memebers rock

If I remember right and the gray wire is for illumination, it will have power when the parking lights/headlights are on, and you turn the light intensity up & down by turning the headlight knob like most other cars. You might almost be better off getting an interior harness from another G-Body around the same year. I'm guessing yours has the wiper switch down by the headlight switch? My '81 does, though I've since changed to a stalk-mounted wiper switch (requiring different wiring).
