dash does not work

i just bought a 78 malibu and the guy i bought it from said he put in a 85 monte carlo dash. i need help on wiring everything up. the speedometer does not work. the gas and oil gauges do not work. and the water temp gauge does not work. i dont know about the wiring for the stereo. it soesnt have one.

I'm guessing it just had the wide sweep speedometer. If this is the case you need to re-pin the dash connector, and install sending units (instead of the switches used for dummy lights) for the temp. and oil pressure gauges. Follow the link below and it will tell you how to do it. I did it with mine, wasn't hard. Does it also have a tach? You may have to get another pin/wire from a donor car to add for it. I also had to replace the printed circuit board on mine, I got the replacement from a junkyard. Most any Monte dash will have the traces needed for everything to work, so you can get a later model (up to last year of the G-Body Montes I believe). If you need to do this, follow the traces on the board and look for corrosion or separation of the mylar that the copper is sealed inside. Also, if you have to get the replacement circuit, try not to bend it, remembering these things are 20+ years old.
