I'm installing a new Lokar firewall mount transmission dipstick and was hoping someone could help answer a few questions I got. It says to use automotive silicone when putting the bottom in the transmission, what sort of stuff do they mean, like permatex? Also what do I use to mount it to the firewall, I mean are there special screws I use. It's a TH350 transmission in a 78 Malibu. Thanks for any tips.

I didn't use silicone on mine, just ATF. I used rivets to attach to firewall. No problems at all.

i didn't use any either, the o-ring works just fine. I used sheet metal screws to attach it to the firewall.

My heater box covers most of the firewall where I would normally mount the dipstick, do you see any problem bolting it to the heater box close behind the old transmission dipstick in the pic?

i wouldn't screw into the heater box. I know several people who have made little brackets to mount it to and also pull it away from the firewall to make it easier to pull the dipstick. use existing bolts/holes if you can.

what size would be needed for an 86 monte carlo? 36in or 24in? i think 24in would be ample amount, but i was gonna get the bellhousing mounted but the big block takes up so much room i dont wanna have to lean over the motor and stick my hand down in between to get to the dipstick, so i want a firewall mounted one. thanks in advance.

p.s. they also have 3" setups, does that mean there is no felxible line, the dipstick is only 3 inches long so pretty hav eto go under the car to check your fluid level? is it worth getting?
