Is the wiring for a monte carlo and a malibu the same? I have a haynes manual for a 78 and up malibu and want to know if I can us the wiring diagram in the back for my 87 monte carlo or do I need to buy one for a monte?

It is probally similar, but the later Montes had some extra wiring for the computer and smog stuff.
Also there may be switches in different locations like the wiper switch, not to mention the dashboard gauges.
I would try to pick up a GM service manual. Might cost you more but they are worth every penny.

I am in the process of installing a 1987 monte carlo dash harness in place of my 79 malibu harness and like stated by TURNA there are quite a few differences. The connector under the hood that plugs into the back of the fuse box is also different.

Also keep in mind they may have changed some of the wire coatings colors.
So in the book a 78 Malibu's power wire may be brown where an 87 Monte's may be red.
You could trace the wrong wire like that and cause major problems.
