I have been told by a couple people that my car is "driving through the convertor". I don't know what this means. My rpm doesn't go excessively high, Any idea's?

When the car goes down track, can you hear the engine rpm change in the gear changes? Basically, it's like the transmission is slipping all the way down track, because when you shift, the converter slips again under load increase.
