8.5 10 bolt posi

Post by truksrme » Sat Nov 21, 2015 11:54 am

I am wondering if anyone can tell me about this. I have a 1981 Chevy Malibu street car, 375 HP 350 CI, Turbo 350 with shift kit and the weak link in this car of course is the 7.5 10 bolt non-posi rearend. I found an 8.5 10 bolt posi 3:42 geared complete rearend from a 1987 Buick GNX for sale. First question, would this bolt right into my Malibu and if so what is an average "good deal" for this rearend?

I often see G-Body 8.5s for 400-600 depending on condition, sometimes they've had a little minor work (seals, etc.) done, sometimes not. I've also seen some people want $1000+ for a 100% stock, untouched assembly, but those people are a little crazy. I'd say if you can get it for under $500 you got a reasonably good deal, the GNX cover may recoup half that cost (or more) since it's a special cover, and you can put a regular 8.5 cover back on it I believe.
