TH350 if the pan is plain, TH200 if the pan says "Metric" I think 79 was the last year for the Th200, so I think you will have a 350.

The 200c carried on until '87. In fact, GM made a number of changes to the later models that fixed early issues.

Gotchv, if you have the 200c, do you plan to keep it with your V8 conversion? I'm looking for a 200c to rebuild for my driver.

200C's had a locking torque converter run off a computer. 81-up had computers, so im pretty sure his 80 does not have a 200C. Correct me if im wrong. Im pretty sure it will be a Th350 in there.

mhamilton: I just pitched a working 200C you could have had. I might have another one in a 81 elky parts car. I will check tonight.

I have an '80 200c. Lockup is controlled via ported vacuum and a fender mounted electric switch. Works well enough, but doesn't have the precice road speed engagement limit (45mph?) that the computer provides.

Thank you for offering, but the shipping would be a killer. I was hoping to find one in NC or southern VA.

Learn something new every day I guess. My 80 had a plain old Th350. The 200C must have been an option in 80 because I has a 79 with a regular weakling Th200. But again. If the trans pan is plain (no stamped METRIC) it is a th350.

I thought that '79 was the year all the cars got a lockup converter, but don't remember... Definitely by '80 all the cars got lockup. '81 GM introduced the 2004r as an option, and I know they had the 3 speed "c" transmissions prior to that. Maybe '79 was the last year for the non-lockup models.

Gotchv, here is a site with all the GM trans pan IDs:
http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-transmission-identification.php

The only problem is that the 200, 250, and 350 all have the same pan--but as 80ECLT said, the 200 will have "metric" in big letters. You can also look at the model tag on the side of the trans (usually pass side), should say what it is.
