Well until I save the moneyfor my 9" rear I think I'm going to pull the gears and carrier out of a s-10. I can get the carrier and gears for $50 at the local u pull it. I went and looked today and can find 3.42 and 3.73 pretty easely of coarse they are open. I did the math and the rpm difference at 60mph is 230rpm. It should turn just over 2800rpm with 3.73 but without takng in account converter slip. Do you think the 3.73 will be to much on the street with a mild bb? Also what are some openions of a gov lock? I don't think it will hold up well and think I will be better off with an open diff.

use the 3.42 and take advantage of the 402BBC torque

what converter are you running? 2000stall?
and tire size?

i would go with the 373, you'l still use all that bbc torque plus you'll get off the line a bit quicker.

Right now it has the stock converter from the 267 sb. The tire size is 255/60/15 which is about 27" tall. The car proably won't see much track time just driving around town on occasion. It will evently get a 700r4 or a 200r4 overdrive. But for now I just want it to be fun to drive around town till I get the money for the real parts that won't explode.

3.73 if little to no track time and eventually going OD. 230 RPM's isn't worth the trouble wondering, just experiment with it, you may even want to go 4.10 or so once you get the 9" and an OD. 8)

either way you go your going to wish you'd did the other. lol

id go with 3.73's. they be alot better with the overdrive until you can get a 9" then go 4.10's or higher. ive heard the gov-locks are weak, i dont know if they mean they wear out quick or break. id run it if they just wear out, but not if they break.

3.73's all the way. Going to a 275/60 tire will almost make up the difference anyways if it makes that much difference. If it was mine I say screw it, find an S10 usually 4cyl auto with GT5 code and snatch those 4.10 gears and let her rip.

The gears probably wont feel that much diffrence on a mild bbc and i had a 7.5 gov lock in my bu with 3.73 gears in a stock housing with stock rear cover and all and ran both times listed in my sig with it never broke it but ive been told i was really lucky.I just put the 9 in to get ready for the 6.0 thats coming. On street tires i dont think you will blow the gov lock apart THAT fast.
