Okay so my Malibu needs a rear ASAP, and my dads friend has an 8.5 Posi 4.11 10 bolt. The problem is it that its out of a Nova/Camaro (Is supposedly 53 inches so I guess thats good, but I didnt check). The best part is that he only wants $100, so im buying it either way. Im just curious as to weather this will fit in my Malibu, im not worried about the mounting brackets because I need custom brackets from Chassis engineering either way ( I have a ladder bar and coil over suspension). Im mainly concerned about the width. I didnt measure it when I looked at it. He claims its 53 inches, but if i can recall arent the nova/camaro rears 54-55? Even if so will this fit? I will be running a 10 inch wheel with a 10 inch with I THINK a 3.5 inch backspacing.Thanks.

Flange-to-flange length is 54 .25" for 67-69, 55.25" for 70-81. IIRC, the stock G-body axle is 52.5".

It will fit with a Ladder Bar or custom four link suspension... You will need different rim backing spacing to get the tires back up under the car 4.5 to 5.5 to do it. Other than that you should be go to go. Jim

If you were close by we could cut the rear down and you would be perfect...lol. Jim

Yeah thats exactly what I figured.... I got the rear today and I cleaned it off and got some numbers off it...
GY G015 1 W (was on the tube)
and 1235542 on the center... gonna look up those numbers now. I have a WAR casing 9 inch ford that I would love to use but that would involve cutting which involves more money which I do not have lol.

You'll be good as long as your using it for a drag race ladder bar diagonal link coil over set-up. Buy some rims and sell the others as I am sure someone on this site will buy them since they should like they are for stock G-body rears. 3.5 backspacing. Jim

with wider rear than stock and 10" rims you're going to need a lot of backspacing to keep it in the wheel well.

I was wrong, the wheel is actually a 5 inch backspacing, measured earlier. Im guessing this will work since its going to be an inch and a half longer on each side, it should be perfect, no? The wheel tubs are stock but torched and hammered from the previous owner, along with the fender lip cut. Took the easy way out instead of mini tubing I guess.

I started to do this same thing when I was looking for a rear end for my car. I had a 71 Nova body with a fresh built 8.5 10bolt in it, I just couldn't do away with the stock style rear suspension though. In your case I'd say a couple hours work and your on the road and havin fun for cheap, since you are already using ladder bars and such.

My car has a 68-72 Chevelle 12 bolt in it now that is the same width as the nove rear. When I first put it in I was using a 15X8.5" wide wheel with 5" backspacing and it fit ok, but not perfect. Stuck out a little too far for my preferences. With a 10" wide wheel with 5" backspacing the wheel is going to stick out approx 1.5" outside the fenderlip. Hope this helps a little. Good luck with it!

Here is a pic of the 15X8.5" wide wheel 5" backspacing with a 26X11.50 ET Street mounted.

you can always use wheel spacers of 1/2" to get you where you want to be .
