I know this may not be here but I figured if someone knows about electrical they could help. I have a 99 intrepid that I will be adding a sound system in. Its going to be using a Sundown SAZ-1500d amplifier hooked up to a 12 inch Fi Q sub. It will be 800watt rms. I will also be installing an amp for all new boston acousic speakers (6 1/2 components and 6x9 coaxials). That amp will probably be around 3-400rms. How many amps should my alt be pushing out. I have a 120a stock alt. Thanks.

Here is some good reading concerning your alternator.

That doesn't seem to make sense. A system that draws 100a is going to need an alternator that big?

Wait, I don't know, I'm confused now, lol.

Most alternators won't produce their advertised output until they're up farther in the RPM range.

The question is, how hard will you really be pushing it? If you have the amp for the mains set up with a high pass filter you can probably figure that won't use more than 10-15A on average. The sub amp, however, looks like it could pull quite a draw from the specs on the site. I have a pair of amps (Pioneer rated 600w x 1 @ 2ohms, Pyramid rated at 90w x 4 @ 4ohms), and on my truck the voltmeter/headlights tend to drop just a hair, only if I have it turned way up (and the truck is idling), and that's on a 105A-rated alternator. If you like your bass heavy I would really look into an alternator upgrade.
