alternator noises

i just pulled my new alternator outta the box and spun it by hand and it has a faint squeak in the direction it will spin when in the car,i wonder what will happen under a load?any thoughts? :x

Is it brand new? I'd exchange it just because... if it makes any noise I'd just tell them I wouldn't feel comfortable. I've had ones that squeak quite a bit when spun by hand, but usually don't have any problems. If it's used, worse thing you can do is try it & see if it charges. If it doesn't and it's an SI alternator, there are rebuild kits for cheap if you feel like taking on a small project 8)

i called powermaster today,the guy said it was the brushes,the noise would be gone upon start up. :roll:

He's right. The brushes will seat to the comm & the noise will stop. I've heard that squeek a LOT of times...

Me too... but it wasn't always on a new alternator.
