in have an 80 malibu 350 with around a 525 cam lift. The car has the original 2.73 rear end gears and im going to swap it with a 3.75 limited slip posi 10bolt. I have a 10bolt rear end, so im going to be replacing the 10 bolt axels with 28 spline mosher axels. Im concerned about breaking the axels. I have factory suspension with a 2600 stall converter and some high performance toyo proxes tires that are pretty sticky. Does anyone else think i would snap and axels?
thanks, kyle

Kyle there is always the possiblity that it could snap. I did it with my 7.5 10 bolt before but now i upgraded to a 12 bolt now.

What HP, gears and stall were you running, how was your traction set up? Thanks for the advice. That's the last thing I want to do is break my axles

At that time the hp was about 400, 410 gears and no traction bars stock control arms and 275-60-15 street tires.

Did you have a converter when you snapped them? And also, I will not be racing, it will strictly be street. But i would still like to be able to get on it. I would say you proally have a little bit more HP than me also. How long did the axels last before they gave?

I have a 3500 stall, they actually lasted a couple of years. But too many beatings it finally had enough and one day i did a burnout and let off the brake and snap it went. Now this 12 bolt will hold up to a blower and 456.
I suggest looking for an 8.5 or 12 bolt try and make due with that 7.5 while saving for a stronger rear and it will give you feel at ease knowing that your rear will take the punishment

I've been doing some research, I think that's what I'm going to do.... I was reading and I think a 8.5 in would be my best option. How much would it cost roughly to get a driveshaft cut so the 8.5 will fit? Also does the 8.5 in rear end bolt up exactly ? If so, what car can I find one in that will have the same overall length?I'm thinking about buying a new rear end and building it up this winter.

Look for one from a buick gn or T-type or a cutlass 84-86 i believe, they are direct fits. I had a D/S cut and trued back up around here and it cost $80 and it came out of a 81 chev pickup.

8.5" = 84-87 GN,T-Type came with 3.42s and Olds 442/HO came with 3.73s.
There have been several 8.5"s for sale on this site last few weeks.

Direct bolt in rear. You do need the DS/DriveShaft or shorten your 7.5" DS by 1".
I doubt you'll find any in a Salvage Yard.

I found a 87 grand natiol rear end with original gears and what not, but with 31 spline mosher axles for 1000.00? what do you guys think? and i can get my drive shaft shortened, with right yoke and u joints for 125.00.
is that a fair price? I would have to put my malibu brakes on the gn rear end as well and install it myself. For 1300.00 total would it be worth it?
