Sooo, I went and did something.... I bought another Malibu. This one is a 78. It has custom paint that was applied back in 2007. The car was never touched afterwards. It has been gutted, side windows included... you know what that means. Yup, it needs floors because of this. It was stored indoors for a number of years but the last few it has sat outside and life has not been real gentle.

First thing done was take it right to the car wash and pressure wash EVERYTHING,,, yup even the inside got done... the dash had so much green mold on it...
This is the first time I knew I had something special. That paint is stunning. The top side is nothing fancy. Typical GM sunset or sunrise orange that was a 03-04 GM color. The bottom is what really caught my attention. As The story goes, the guy who owned the car and had it painted was a tattoo artist. He wanted this paint to rep his pallor. The bottom color is candy rootbeer. I thought it was just plain old black... the tribal stripes have silver ghosted into the centers of each stripe. Then the very bottom has a marbling effect. It’s really kind of cool to see.

I still can’t believe I have 2 Malibu’s now,,, In my other post I mentioned getting my hands dirty with a couple projects. I also recently picked up a 86 Trans Am. That one has been parked since 1995. Enough about that one though...

So as I was at work this week I find myself starring at both of the Malibu’s and I soon realize I can make the front of the 78 look so much nicer. So off came the front bumper and the chrome grill and headlight trim. I installed a black grill and black headlight trim... what a difference. But the whole thing came full circle when it dawned on me that the smooth bumpers that were on the 78 are exactly what was on 1BADBU back when I first built her... So off came the new fiberglass front bumper from 1BADBU. It got a fresh coat of black lacquer and installed on the 78... it looks so much better.

I worked on the rear bumper today,,, again 1BADBU donated its rear fiberglass bumper for the cause. I threw the Draglites with the ET Streets on for good measure.

The car was holding a lot of water when I saved it due to the side windows and all rubber seals being removed. So much water that the trunk was completely filled up to the step up in the floor under the speaker shelf/package tray. Fortunately being this full I guess it kind of preserved the metal because there was no soft spots I could punch a screwdriver through. So I shop vac Ed the water out. Filled a 7 gallon vacuum 4 times sucking all the water out. I dried it out for a few hours. Wire wheeled and cleaned the floors. Primed with rustoleum and top coated with gloss black rustoleum. It turned out great but the shine was too much. I sprayed a matte clear over the top and it knocked the shine right out of it.
