Ok so I got my 407 sbc in my 79 bu. Get everything ready for first fire. Its got an HEI distributor. #1 tdc compression, rotor towards number one on cap. It wont start... no matter where we pull the distributor. Then we messed around and got it way out of wack to the point it was backfiring through the carb really bad.. Too advanced.. did the whole process over again w/getting #1 right... still wont fire but got rid of the backfire. I have double checked the firing order 800 times..... I've checked the wire routing 800 times.... Starting to wonder if its something in the distributor.. .any insight? I really wanna fire this thing its done and wont run such a disappointment. ](*,) ](*,) :(

it sounds like you may have it out 180. was it all lined up when you put the timing chain on? you could be tdc on #6

When I did mine the same thing happened, I ran the firing order over several times still wouldnt fire...I then pulled it out spun it 180 and re hook everything and then she came alive..If you marked the dist on #1 and your absolutly sure you hav the firing order corect, I would pull the #1 spark plug and look at the piston to make sure it topped out, just to cover my trax...You my hav already did all that, but figured I'd try to help...Good luck :-k

#1 and #6 will be at the top at the same time, thats why it's very easy to be out 180. before you pull the distributor out just move the wires. put the #1 wire on the cap where #6 would be and go through the firing order. if it fires up then yank the dizzy out and set it on #1 and put the wires back the way they should be.
