What is an adequate fuel system for a 550+HP 406sbc? Start with say a Holley Black pump and go from there. Need at least 1/2" line? I'm thinking mine may not be enough. Holley Blue w/3/8" steel/-6AN lines. Still using stock fuel tank and pickup. Holley 950HP-6.5psi at carb-79jets front and rear. Having high RPM misfire/surge. Plugs look ok could be slightly lean. Going to try different jets next weekend but question came up about fuel system. What do you guys think? Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it when i searched. Thanks. Matt

I'm running about the same power 550-600hp 413 sbc, I shift between 7000-7500 I run a stock tank, stock lines, with a holley mech. fuel pump and 950 hp carb. Mine runs fine no problems running out of fuel. A bigger fuel system won't hurt any though. See if jetting and carb tweaking helps first.

What jetting changes have you made if any? How much fuel pressure do you run? I'm not much of a carb guy, usually they've been fine out-of-the-box. Another guy at the track had the same problem as i've been having and he ended up having to raise secondary float level higher than normal(Demon carb though). Thanks for the reply. Matt

be sure the floats are high enough. put a power valve block off in the rear block and jet up to an 86 in the rear. good place to start.

I haven't gotten to play with the jets yet, I'm going to the track next weekend to mess with it. Fuel pressure is whatever the pump is putting out, I don't have a regulator or a gauge on it.

Problem solved!
Ended up being electrical. MSD wasn't grounded properly and mag wire from MSD box to distributor was too close to plug wires and other wires that carried voltage. Ran ground wire from MSD all the way to neg. post on battery in trunk plus ran 1ga. from neg. post to engine block. I guess you can never have too many grounds they say?! Thanks for all the replies and input. I'm sure i'll need more advice sooner or later. Matt
