Grand national rear in a 1979 malibu

Hey guys, does anyone know if a 87 grand national rear is a direct bolt in on a 79 malibu? Someone said i may have to shorten the drive shaft an inch? Thanks for ths help!

Yes it will fit, you'll also need to shorten the driveshaft 1 inch. The 8.5 pinion length is longer vs the 7.5

Yep, have one in mine, direct bolt in except the driveshaft needs to be 1" shorter as 81Regal said. I even swapped the whole backing plates and brakes from my 7.5" right over too.

its a direct swap, except the driveshaft has to be 1" shorter. if you can get the driveshaft from the donor car, that should be 1" shorter. that's what I did for the 8.5" that was in my 2 door before the dana 60, and also what I did for my station wagon.
