i have hydroboost on my monte and i love it, using all new/rebuild 85 grand national parts, i got the reman hydroboost unit and mastercylinder and filter from autozone for $120, a hydroboost brake pedal from a 85 gn for free, russel braided stainless lines and fittings for around $100 and an 85gn power steering pump for i think $85, all with liftime warranties and not braking the bank. the parts he's refering to that cost $600 are for the 86-87 gn powermaster, an entirely different system, any questions pm me.

I have the 86-87 Powermaster unit on my Malibu. It works great. Autozone has them for about $450. You can also find them on the full size Pontiac and Chevrolet station wagons on those years.

have you thought about adding a vacuum pump to operate your brakes? i was thinking of going this route myself, but i haven't heard any feedback on them.

here's one i've looked at, but i can't bring myself to spend that much on one at the moment.

i have some pics of the setup on my cheesy website, with a diagram for routing to pressure lines, and yes the pedal is different than the vacuum brakes one, i got the pedal from my buddy that cuts up gn for a living, and he had a truckload of spare parts for cores etc.. also the mastercylinder on the hydroboost is a complete cast iron unit not like the vacuum brakes with the leak prone plastic resevouir

I like the direction of your ride. I bookmarked that diagram for future reference. I found a unit at the juckyard yesterday. 50 bucks for everything.
Ill have to go back and get the pedal. Mine is a stick car....I may have to do some welding. We will see. Thanks for the help. Jason

Before I put the GN engine in my Malibu I had the hydroboost set-up like you're getting. It worked good but I didn't like the spongy pedal feel. It never acted like it could lock the wheels up even if I wanted them to. The pedal just went down really low even though under normal braking conditions the "feel" was good.

:D Pardon the interuption; but I had to let 78monte454 know that he & I have the same rims. I wish I'd have gone with 17" after seeing his though. :D

Everyone I have ever spoken to, that has used the Hydratech version of a hydroboost has nothing but praise for it. The hydratech unit is pretty slick, the owner of Hydratech is local to me and I have checked out the unit on his 455" powered mid 80's Cutlass. I'm sure you've been to the site already, but for those just tuning in: http://www.hydratechbraking.com/ . I'm all about the budget build though too, and more power to you if you put something together on the cheap! Just don't put that gorgeous car into a wall after saving a buck or two.

I hear you loud and clear. I currently have Baer disc set up on all four corners. I just hated the hard pedal. Im in it cheap enough if it doesnt work ill just change to the hydratech stuff. Thanks for the reply!

just take one off the bread truck, use some of that southern ingenuity you got!

The ones on the trucks are driven by the power steering. IIRC, the later GNs and the passenger cars are driven by an electric motor. I'd save a crapload of money and effort and just buy an electric vacuum pump from Master Power Brakes and be done with it.
