Power steering box differences

I'm not sure if this helps you guys at all but i bought a monte ss box and the pitman arm for a monte ss and it works fine with my elcamino's center link

that's a good point,i bought it because i didn't have one.i'm afraid i'm no help then sorry.if i posted the gm part number from the arm i bought would you be able to cross it to see if it matches the listing for your application?sorry wish i could help more

its fine. I'm sure that it probably wouldn't hurt to change it anyways. just trying to stay in budget. The 78 just has to be special. its all on its own

You will need a pitman arm for an 800 box out of a G-body. The 605 pitman arm is different.

Are all 800 series boxes the same ratio? I replaced the box in my 1988 Monte for one from my 1987 GTA which is a 2 and 1/2 turn lock to lock. They both have the same castings including the "Z" in the top side but I never took notice of the old boxes ratio. I suppose I could check it when I get home but am curious anyways.

800 boxes aren't all the same. IDK what the "Z" on the casting means. The ID is usually stamped on the bottom cover. I honestly don't remember most of the various common ones, but a GTA box is a high effort, quick ratio box. IIRC, GTAs had the WS6 suspension package. That would make it the same "XH" stamping box as an IROC.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I have a question about manual steering boxes.
Can you use this steering box on a malibu, do not know if the pitman arm fits may be possible to use the stock pitman arm :?:

Ok, so I pulled the Bu' out of the garage today and while it was sitting and idling, I noticed the top of the steering gear box was wet and a small puddle was forming. Looks like the seal has finally let go... Anyway I have the crappy 600 Series box (round aluminum plate on top-no bolts) and I found what looks like an 800 series out of an 81 Camaro on eBay

I am assuming these will work with our cars? Looks like it comes with the arm
