Rear end what is what

I know where I can find a lot of g body bodies. I was wondering if there was something in vin or on car that will tell me what rear end it has. Most of these cars are sitting low cause no wheels can't really see what is what. Most are regals and four door cars, some elkys and few montes. Nothing that sticks out. Looking for a 8.5 to rebuild. I know finding a good 12 bolt would be even harder. I have a 9 in housing got from a friend all brackets are on it, but wanting all chevy.

7.5 has "fangs" while the 8.5 is squared off.

If it's a 84-87 Buick GN/T-Type or Olds 442/HO it will have the 8.5" 10-Bolt. All other G-Bodies have the 7.5" 10-Bolt rear.

If you have the 9", just go for it! I know you want to be all Chevy, but you can't see it past the gas tank anyways...

There ALOT of die hard chevy guys out there running a Ford 9". They are running them for a reason: Lighter and stronger! You got the rear that you need already!

Agreed...For what you would spend on going through an old 8.5, you'll be money ahead because you're already on your way with the 9"...

I'd build the 9" and you'll never have to be concerned with the rear end...
