Should I polish the 7.5" turd?

Well I got to thinkin about the 7.5" rear and a 9". I can add 28 spline moser axles, a pro series posi, a girdle rear cover, and all the bearings and wheel studs for under a grand. If I go 9" I have a 3.50 open center section, but I need to add a posi and new bearings, plus a housing and axles, I'm up to over $1300 and I still don't have brakes, but I might have some disc brakes off a lincon but I have to look. This car will hardly ever see the the strip, but you never know. Do you think a beefed up 7.5 will hold up ok for what I'm doing or should I just suck it up and save for the 9"?

I'm planning on keeping my 7.5. If I ever go over 500hp I'll probably upgrade to a better rear though. If it's hardly ever going to see the track then I say why not :)

I'm starting to think with a couple of upgrades the 7.5 will survive just fine for me.

I busted the ring gear in a 7.5 in my first Malibu. It wasn't a fast car, might have been pushing 300hp at the crank on a good day. lol. I abused it alot on the street though, lots of burnouts. Never had it at the track nor did it ever have any sticky tires either. I'm not a fan of spending money on these, but I hear of them holding up. I'd keep the money and save for an upgrade and just run what you have until then. JMO.

I say invest in a good rear end now, that way you won't be worring about it breaking later wishing you had it to do over. Just my .02

I have run in the 11's on my 7.5 rear. I have a 3.73 gear and a Auburn posi in it. That is it. I have all the suspension parts on it like adjustable control arms and such. I have hadd the tires off the ground at the track so it hooks pretty good. I run a 3400 stall and abuse it to death. I use a set of Mickey Street E.T's 28x12.50x15. I have been running it like this for 10 years and maybe I am an exception.

I see that you are running a bbc though. I am running a 406 with 439hp. If you are running it on the street with no track use it should live. But, that BBC will destroy it on the track with some tires. Just a little input on the 7.5. My buddy runs the same setup in his SS and he pulls the tires about a foot and carries them for about 4 feet or more and runs in the 10's with it. God luck with it.
