When did chevy switch from inline to staggered bolts for starters? I have a 69 impala engine in my El Camino and it has a staggered bolt pattern, but the block looks drilled and tapped for inline also. am I correct in assuming that a inline starter will bolt on. I am looking at getting one of the inline mini starters for 153 tooth flywheel.

It may have been mentioned before, but 153 teeth flex plate/flywheel uses the in-line bolt pattern starter and the 168 teeth, such as used in your '69 Imp sbc, uses the staggered bolt pattern. As far as I know, the blocks are drilled with either type of starter.

Thanks for the info, I just went down to the parts store and bought both. It ended up being the inline. I was a bit confused because I had seen the inline mini starters fit both flywheels. Then the rebuilt inline starter that fit was bad so had to pull it out and return it. Its up and running now, just need exhaust.
