No idea on the malibu. I ran into this problem on my 87 grand wagoneer when changing to an s10 steering box. Nothing was able to be reversed to correct the problem. I looked and found that I could dismantle the rag joint, flip and reassemble. It worked like a charm!
The wagoneer runs a gm steering column with a ford steering box stock. It is a easy bolt in swap to a s-10. That drops the turns lock to lock from 7 turns to 3 1/2 turns. In case you were wondering. Off-roading is more enjoyable when you don't have to stop and rest every 15 minutes.
