this explains a lot to me. i have a holley 750 w/ vac. secondaries. i put a proform carb body on it. the proform carb body has no provisions for a ported vacuum source. so i plugged the vac can, and set my total timing for 34 degrees. i read later that a vehicle with vacuum advance will idle cooler than without. since i run the street the most i bought vacuum tees to install my vacuum can back on manifold vacuum. while i was at the strip i ran my best with out vacuum can attached. i though, what the heck, i will tee in and run again just to see what happens. i installed the tee and ran again. no change at all. i even came back to the pits and watched my temp guage to see if it idled cooler. no effect there either. i check my timing at idle and pulled and plugged the vacuum line going to the can and the timing stayed the same. i didn't even think about idle vacuum. my car idles with about 8"hg. if my vac. advance can only pulls at 8 or more, (it's adjustable petronix kit on a hei), than my engine had no vacuum advance. this is why i love to read stuff like this. gives me some knowledge. thanks for the article.

new update. my vacuum source is maniflold not ported. i set my timing at 34 degrees total @300rpm, (350 small block). my initial was at 14 with no advance. my mechanical was all over the place as rpm increased. by changing my advance springs produced no visible change. i pulled the hei and checked the bushings and such. rebuilt the distributor with new bushings that my b-i-l had in a kit along with another hei for parts. cleaned up the mechanical advance issue. noticed when i was cruising at 55 mph, the engine seemed to lunge quite a lot. attached a hand vacuum pump to the vacuum mod and had no movement in the arm. scrapped that can and went to the autoparts store and bought a accell adjustable vacuum advance can. when installed on the stock settings my timing advanced to 18 degree at idle, my vacuum went from 9 in to 12 in and still kept my 34 degree total timing. best thing is my cruising speeds are smooth as silk. if you are going to street your car, keep the can.
